Our inaugural episode of the Let’s Talk Longevity podcast is here!
For our first episode, we wanted to know if we are anywhere near Longevity Escape Velocity. Defined as a hypothetical situation in which life expectancy is extended longer than the time that is passing, we decided the best conversation on it would be with its biggest advocate, Dr. Aubrey de Grey, and an equally well-known skeptic of the likelihood of it taking place, Dr. Charles Brenner. This debate did not need hosts!

Guests
Dr. Charles Brenner is a leading innovator in NAD biology and the discoverer of the NR pathway to NAD. He’s also a leading skeptic in the longevity space who points out that the Ames mouse and daf-2 worm taught us that the best examples of single-gene alterations that confer longer lifespan are genes conserved for growth and fertility, not lifespan. His work has deeply called into question the claimed links between sirtuin genes and animal lifespan, the status of partial programming as a viable longevity strategy, and the utility of the proposed aging clocks. We’ve also learned from his takes on trendy dietary and lifestyle practices so he was our go-to first guest to evaluate the prospects for achieving longevity escape velocity. He did not disappoint!
He’s a Stanford Ph.D., who has run his own lab since 1996. He’s currently the Alfred E Mann Family Foundation Chair of Diabetes & Cancer Metabolism at the City of Hope in California.

Dr. Aubrey de Grey is a biomedical gerontologist based in Mountain View, California, USA. He received his BA in computer science and Ph.D. in biology from the University of Cambridge. His research interests encompass the characterization of all the types of self-inflicted cellular and molecular damage that constitute mammalian aging and the design of interventions to repair and/or obviate that damage. Dr. de Grey is a Fellow of both the Gerontological Society of America and the American Aging Association and sits on the editorial and scientific advisory boards of numerous journals and organizations. He is a highly sought-after speaker who gives 40-50 invited talks per year at scientific conferences, universities, and companies in areas ranging from pharma to life insurance, and to the public.
